Erectile Dysfunction – Causes & Solutions

Erectile dysfunction is a very common issue that leads men to seek our help.

The Canadian Study of Erectile Dysfunction identified that 49.4% of men over 40 suffer from ED (Canadian Urological Association erectile dysfunction guideline 2015).

Though all men may experience an occasional lapse of sexual function, ED is the reoccurring inability to achieve an adequate erection, despite being sexually aroused.

Erectile dysfunction is a potentially treatable medical condition that is not related to masculinity or sexual prowess.

At Pollock Clinics, we are dedicated to providing our patients with the latest innovative treatments for erectile dysfunction.

We offer multiple ED treatment options including shockwave therapy, PRP injections, and Trimix self-injection.

Our Approach to ED Treatment

At Pollock Clinics, our mission is to strive to uphold the highest international standards of male medical care while treating our patients with compassion, dignity, and respect.

This means that we need to do our best to offer the right treatment to each patient. Our ED clinic process is focused on this goal, starting with a confidential initial visit.

While our treatments have support from scientific literature, many of them are not yet included in established national treatment protocols, because of the limited number of studies completed.

For your reference, please click here to see details of accepted national treatment protocols from the Canadian Urological Association and the American Urological Association for erectile dysfunction.

Patients are encouraged to review the relevant literature that we have provided with their own family doctor or urologist to support informed decisions on treatment.

Many of our patients have already tried conventional methods and come to Pollock Clinics for an innovative approach. Results will vary, and are not guaranteed.

Our ED Treatments & Services

Erectile dysfunction is a complex condition and therefore it needs a multi-level treatment plan. At our clinic, we offer treatments to address both physiological and psychological factors contributing to ED because your results are likely to be significantly better by combining multiple forms of therapies. These include:

EDSWT uses low-intensity acoustic sound waves and is a non-invasive treatment that requires no drugs and can have long term benefits.

Shockwave therapy treats the underlying vascular cause of erectile dysfunction by improving the quantity and quality of blood vessels and blood flow to the penis, addressing the actual problem that is causing ED and not just the symptoms. Read More.

Limited studies suggest that Platelet Rich Plasma Injections, also known as PRP Shots, might work for ED treatment by enhancing blood vessel regeneration, thereby increasing the amount of blood flow to the penis, as well as nerve regeneration and sensitivity enhancement.

The treatment uses the patient’s own blood, and platelet rich plasma is separated and injected into the penis.

Plasma-rich-platelet therapy (PRP) has also been a successful treatment modality in orthopedics, plastic surgery, and sports medicine. Read More.

Trimix can deliver, in most men, a reliable one-hour erection within minutes, once the correct dosage is calibrated.

The benefits include minimal side effects because, unlike pills, Trimix is injected locally directly into the penis rather than being ingested and circulating through the entire body.

Men should be able to inject themselves at home prior to sexual activity after participating in our detailed training program. Learn More.

Sexual issues are multi-dimensional, arising out of biological, psychological, behavioral and social factors. Counselling can enhance the efficacy of medical interventions.

Sex therapy is often helpful in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, even when physical factors are the principal cause. Sex therapy, with our experienced, certified sex therapist, can help a couple overcome these feelings and re-establish intimacy. Learn More.

Tom Foster, MSW, RSW, RCC, Certified Sex Therapist

Tom Foster is a sex therapist with over 35 years of experience.

He has worked extensively with issues related to sexuality, relationship conflict (and growth), as well as dispute resolution.

Tom focuses on applying a strength-based approach to working with individuals, couples, and families. He is particularly effective in helping clients manage the strong emotions that can play a significant role in achieving a constructive outcome. Tom applies emotional regulation and mindfulness principles and has extensive training and experience in working with those addressing mood and substance use concerns.

Tom Foster has a BA from the University of Alberta, a Masters in Social Work [MSW] from the University of Toronto. Tom completed the Sex Therapy Training Program at the Program in Human Sexuality, University of Minnesota Medical School. Following his training in Minneapolis he continued to work at the Program in Human Sexuality for several years.

Tom has worked for decades in both the employee and family assistance field as well as in his private practice.

Tom feels that gaining a perspective on what it is we are being challenged by is key; however, stepping back and getting wise to the problem can seem almost impossible.

With perspective we can develop more effective strategies for meeting individual goals. There are many different means to gaining the perspective we need to thrive. Counselling is one way we can help our patients.

Mr. Foster bases his sex therapy practice on these ideas:

  • Therapy can only occur when the client feels respected.
  • Therapy is talking about things we don’t ordinarily talk about, or talking about the things we do talk about in a different kind of way.
  • Safety and risk are different sides of the same coin; in therapy we need to create safety in order to take risk.
  • Individuals, couples, and families can benefit greatly by learning about and employing constructive dispute resolution strategies.
  • When we become polarized with either a problem or another person, we often develop beliefs about the problem or the other person that fail to take into account the full range of interests.
  • Learning to quiet the internal dialogue is fundamental to hearing the fuller voice of ourselves.
  • Being aware of the messages that our body gives us is the first step in emotional savvy.
